Uni-Mil bounce back to beat Tygerberg

Uni-MilsAdrian Roberts looks to spread the ball during his sides encounter against Tygerberg at a rainy Florida Park at the weekend. Uni-Mil emerged victorious 27-21.

Tygerberg had an opportunity to claw their way to fourth position on the log but were met by a resilient Union-Milnerton (Uni-Mil) in a Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) Super League A (SLU) encounter at Florida Park at the weekend.

Under the difficult weather conditions, Uni-Mil weathered the storm to hang on for a 27-21 victory away from home to move to fourth place on the log.

Uni-Mil had suffered a shock 26-29 defeat to SK Walmer in their last encounter and another defeat would have been a low blow for a side looking to go all the way in the SLA.

The Tiere had the full backing of their home crowd who cheered them on every time they touched the ball but Uni-Mil proved their superiority by absorbing all that pressure and turning it into points.

Uni-Mil have proven to be one of the top contenders for the SLA title and will be looking to extend their winning streak against Villager at home this weekend.

The loss was Tygerberg’s fourth of the season, though they are faring much better than they did in their SLA 2018 campaign.

Elsewhere, NTK registered their first win of the season with a 17-10 victory against fellow SLA strugllers Primrose in Parow.

The victory lifted NTK to 13th place on the log with 11 points.

NTK have struggled in their second season in the SLA and will hope that the victory over Primrose will bring them a stroke of good luck and help them to move away from the relegation zone.

The win for NTK was also a great way to celebrate eightman Brandon Grant’s 100th cap for the club.

Grant made the moment even sweeter when he scored one of the three tries his side scored on the day.

With Victorians pulling out of the SLA, it means only one team will get the drop back to Super League B and the competition is tight between NTK and Primrose.

NTK, however, are six points ahead of Primrose and will be looking to widen that gap.

But the going doesn’t get any easier for them as they are yet to face sides like Stellenbosch and UCT.

Having played the only winless team in the league, NTK will go into their remaining fixtures hoping that Primrose’s woes continue.

If NTK stands any chance of registering their second win of the season, it will have to be this weekend when they welcome SK Walmer.

Walmer sit four points above NTK on the log, having won two games.

One of those wins, however, was against playoff hopefuls, Uni-Mil which speaks volumes about the unpredictability of the side.

NTK will not have any easier opportunity to secure their place in the league than this fixture. Walmer, on the other hand, are coming back from a 3-17 defeat to Durbanville-Bellville (Durbell) and will want to use NTK as a rebound as they also look to solidify their SLA status.

In another SLA encounter that took place at the weeeknd, False Bay RFC maintained their top position on the log with a 5-0 win away to Hamilton.

The Bay is the first side to cross the 40-point mark and have a two point lead over Durbell. The loss all but confirms that Hamilton will not be making it to the play-offs come end of the season.

They have only won three of their nine games.

With False Bay just sneaking past Hamilton, the stage is set for a humdinger of a match against Brackenfell this weekend as they will be looking for a better showing against a side that has all the ability to win.

Brackenfell enjoyed a weekend off which could not have come at a better time for them as they are next faced with one of their toughest encounters in their calendar. After seven matches, Brackenfell’s only blemish came against UWC back in May, a rather surprising 35-41 defeat.
