Union-Milnerton (Uni-Mil) are no longer the dark horses of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) Super League A (SLA) but will be marked by other teams as a force to be reckoned with.
Their excellent run last season saw them making the semi-finals where they faced eventual SLA champions, Maties.
In that match, Uni-Mil stood their ground and showed the students that they would not be bullied even though they lost 32-50.
Uni-Mil’s courageous display puts them in the same class as other division heavyweights such as Durbanville-Bellville and False Bay RFC.
They have started the 2019 campaign like a house on fire and have already crossed the 100 points mark, proving that last year’s run was no fluke.
They have won both their opening encounters and are one of four sides that have collected full points in both games.
The others being False Bay, UCT and Tygerberg. It’s worth noting though that Maties are yet to take to the field this season.
Uni-Mil showed no mercy to Hamilton in the league opener last week and finished the game with an emphatic 63-23 victory.
If there was anyone still in doubt of their form, they would have been proven otherwise at the weekend when they followed that victory with a 46-29 win against Paarl.
They take a break this weekend and will be meeting their toughest task of the season on Saturday April 27 when they travel to Stellenbosch to face Maties.
A good performance against the students would further solidify their place as heavyweights of the division.
