Table View police found half a million rand in cash in the boot of a car driven by a 15-year-old on Monday June 5.
The boy was arrested in Parklands Main Road.
Police say he was trying to avoid them at a vehicle checkpoint. After trying to speed away, he was caught in Sandown Road, Parklands.
According to Captain FC Van Wyk, the boy said his reason for speeding off was that he did not have a driver’s licence.
When officers searched the car boot, they found the R500 000.
The boy at first told the officers he was 18, but when they asked him where he got the money, he said he was 15 and refused to say anything more. The police notified the boys’ parents of his arrest.
He was held at the Table View police station until his appearance in the Juvenile Court at Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday June 9.
He has since been released on bail, and the charges against him include reckless and negligent driving, possession of drugs.
The boy is set to appear in court again on Thursday July 20.
