A Table View woman is celebrating her fur baby’s date of adoption with a 3km dog walk in Sunningdale on Sunday March 3.
A bag of dog food and R50 gets you into the event.
Animal Welfare Society (AWS) in Phillipi, which turned 90 this year, is the beneficiary of this year’s event.
Allan Perrins from AWS thanked Ms Durant for making them the beneficiary of the walk. He said their 90th anniversary was a significant milestone and that they wanted to be around for another 90 years.
“This past December has been one of our busiest compared to the last four years. We saw roughly 2 000 animals in the space of 28 days,” said Mr Perrins.
He said the large number of injuries, surgeries and influx of unwanted animals added strain on their already stressed budget.
“We are always in need of donations,” he said.
Megan Durant adopted her beloved dog, Ace, from AWS five years ago.
Ace was a rescue dog dropped at AWS when he was about four months old.
Ms Durant said adopting Ace was the best decision she ever made. She calls him the apple of her eye.
He was named after the ace of hearts card.
As Ace’s date of birth is unknown, Ms Durant has celebrated his date of adoption by doing fund-raising for animal shelters.
“Shelters need so much help, and people want to help but don’t always know how,” she said.
In the last four years, Ms Durant has raised about two tons of dog food on what she calls Ace’s “adoptavercery”.
Previous beneficiaries included Fallen Angels Pet Rescue, Lucky Lucy, Sighthound Rescue SA and Ndumanzi Animal Clinic. Besides the walk, the day will also include, among other things, spot prizes, a raffle as well as microchipping.
Ms Durant will do a cheque handover to AWS at their 90th anniversary event at the Kelvin Grove Club in Newlands on Saturday March 9.
