Matrics across the province celebrated after getting their results last week and the moment was extra sweet for Milnerton High School after it scored a 100% pass rate for the 14th year running.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the national matric pass rate of 75.1% on Thursday January 4, although matrics in the Western Cape only got their results a day later.
The Western Cape came third, with a pass rate of 82.8%, down by 3% from 2016 and behind Free State with 86% and Gauteng with 85%.
Apart from maintaining its impressive record, Milnerton High School also saw 78% of its 208 matrics score a bachelor’s pass, which grants access to university, and 18 pupils had A aggregates.
Austin Field, the school’s top matric pupil, received an 87% average including an 89% for English, 93% for maths and 95% for physical science.
Sinenjongo High School scored 86.3% matric pass rate, with top pupil Avile Msongelo getting 83% for maths, 84% for computer applications technology and 89% for physical science.
Of the school’s 131 matrics who sat the finals, 26% received bachelor’s passes.
Bosmansdam High School received a 97,6% pass rate. Top achiever Jamie Mannel, the school’s head prefect, received nine distinctions with an overall average of 93,3%, making this the best achievement ever in the National Senior Certificate by a Bosmansdam pupil. And 52.8% of the school’s 125 matric scored bachelor’s passes.
Abbotts College Milnerton had 96.9% pass, 64 matrics who sat the exams and 46.9% bachelor’s pass
Bloubergrant Secondary School had 98% pass, 98 matrics writing and 57% bachelor’s pass.
Buren High School had 93.4% pass, 61 matrics writing and a 39.3% bachelor’s pass.
CBC St John’s Parklands had 97.7% pass, 44 matrics writing and a 72.7% bachelor’s pass.
Edgemead High School had 98.7% pass, 224 matrics writing and a 76.3% bachelor’s pass.
Inkwenkwezi Secondary School had a 92.1% pass, 126 matrics writing and 43% bachelor’s pass.
Jan van Riebeeck High School had 97.6% pass, 84 matrics writing and 75% bachelor’s pass.
Melkbos High School had 100% pass, 100 matrics writing and 62% bachelor’s pass.
Melkbosstrand Private School had 100% pass, 21 matrics writing and 76.2% bachelor’s pass.
Parklands College had 100% pass, 96 pupils writing and a 90.6% bachelor’s pass.
Riverside College had 100% pass, 9 pupils writing and 55.6% bachelor’s pass.
Table View High School had 98.2% pass, 169 matrics writing and 68% bachelor’s pass.
Tafelberg School had 100% pass, 29 matrics writing and 44.8% bachelor’s pass.
Jessica Shelver, the spokeswoman for Education MEC Debbie Schafer, congratulated the 2017 matrics.
“We are especially pleased that the Western Cape has again achieved the highest percentage of bachelor’s passes in the country, with 39.1% of pupils achieving this quality pass,” she said.
Ms Shelver said the Western Cape achieved the highest proportion of mathematics passes, bachelor’s passes and distinctions, as well as, the highest throughput rate.
“The Free State, by contrast, had the fifth highest throughput rate in the country,” she said.
