Seven parties have registered candidates to contest the Ward 4 by-election next Wednesday, August 2.
The vacant position came to be when former Ward 4 councillor, Tando Jafta, was removed from the position following accusations by the public that he did not avail himself to the people.
Ward 4 consists of Joe Slovo Park, Marconi Beam (west of Montague Drive and Marconi Road, south of Kunene Circle, east of Koeberg Road and north of Platinum Junction, Platinum Close, Platinum Crescent, Centurion Business Park, Prosperity Park, Computer Road, West End, The Gables, Milnerton (north-west of Koeberg Road, south-west of Racecourse Road and Marine Drive, east of Sunset Links Estate and north of Broad Way, Graaff Avenue and Begonia Close), Milnerton Ridge, Montague Gardens, Phoenix, Royal Ascot, Summer Greensand Sunset Beach.
The parties that will be contesting the election are the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), the African National Congress (ANC), Al Jama-ah, Cape Party, Democratic Alliance (DA), the Democratic Independent Party (DIP) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
The ACDP has Nomaxhosa Mejeni, a 42-year-old mother of two whose father played an active role in politics before he died. She grew up with her mother and did well for herself, receiving a qualification in human resources and doing a course in sssociate coaching at the University of Cape Town.
Ms Mejeni said she loves to serve the people around her. She lives in Milnerton where she has been for 17 years and knows the area well.
ANC candidate Luthando Goodman Lekevana was born in the Eastern Cape and is a married family man with children. East London is where his love for boxing began and soon he was challenging the national champion. After moving to Cape Town, he did volunteer work and mentoring the youth and inmates at Goodwood Correctional Centre.
Mr Lekevana, a Joe Slovo resident, said he had a good understanding of the area’s issues and planned to tackle the housing issue.
The Cape Party has Jack Miller who is a University of Cape Town alumni. Mr Miller and his party are calling for political and economic freedom in the Cape. He believes that this by-elections is an opportunity for Milnerton residents to take back control over their community, and how their taxes are spent.
The DA has Mlulami Wandisile Neville Ngeyi. He was born in the Eastern Cape and moved to Cape Town at a very young age with his parents. Mr Ngeyi is a married father of three and lives in Bothasig. He has a BA degree from the University of the Western Cape.
Mr Ngeyi vows to try to solve the sewerage problems in Ward 4 and also wants to tackle the illegal dumping that plagues the area. Housing is also big on his list of things to address.
Al Jama-ah’s candidate is Mogamad Ganief Ebrahim Hendricks, while the DIP has Pamela Olga Overmeyer and the EFF has Siyabulela Mani from Joe Slovo.
The by-election will be held on Wednesday August 2. The application period for special votes closed at 5pm on Friday July 21 and 58 home visits and 60 station visits were approved.
Ongoing meetings between the IEC and SAPS were held and on Monday July 24 plans for special votes and the by-election day was finalised.
Voting station staff and party agents were trained on Saturday July 22 at Sinenjongo High School.
The by-elections will have three voting stations: Milnerton High School in Pienaar Road; Summer Greens community hall in Tinkers Way; and Sinenjongo High School at 4 Khozi Drive, Joe Slovo Park in Milnerton.
