On Thursday April 21 the Hawks’ narcotics unit arrested four men who were linked to a recent theft at Cleveland police station in Johannesburg.
The officers were following up on a lead when three luxury vehicles were spotted driving in a convoy along the N1 route near Canal Walk.
The vehicles were stopped and three handguns, several boxes of expensive whiskey and cigars were found. Among those arrested was convicted rapist, Rashied Staggie, who is currently on parole.
The contraband, worth millions of rand, was confiscated in the process.
The four men, aged between 20 and 60, have been charged with unlawful possession of firearms, illegal possession of ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property.
They appeared at Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday April 25.
* On Monday April 25, a business in Isipingo Road, Joe Slovo, was robbed by two gunmen. Members at Milnerton SAPS received information that the robbers fled the scene in a white Golf.
Constable Avela Ntunja and his partner spotted a white Golf fitting the description on Omarumba Road, in Joe Slovo, and the vehicle was pulled over and searched.
“Inside the vehicle members found two 9mm firearms of which the numbers were removed. Two magazines with rounds were also found.
“The two male suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and taken to the Milnerton police station for processing,” said Milnerton SAPS media spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daphne O’Reilly. The suspects will appear in Cape Town Court on Thursday April 28.
