Mayor Patricia de Lille took her pop-up office to Albow Gardens in Brooklyn, on Thursday August 16, where the City of Cape Town is refurbishing council rental units.
She was joined by Mayco members Suzette Little and Stuart Diamond, as well as Ward 55 councillor Fabian Ah-Sing.
The visit started with a walkabout of the 212 Albow Gardens units, which are home to more than 1 200 people.
As part of the R2.1 million refurbishment, which started in October last year, the outsides of the blocks are being painted and repairs are being done to staircases, cracked walls, leaking roofs, gutters, downpipes and windows.
Mr Diamond said the council flats provided accommodation for some of the city’s poorest residents.
More upgrades are due to start in September and will include fixing leaks and other plumbing work. The City said the project used local labour and should be done by mid December.
Ms De Lille said she was impressed with the community’s food garden.
“I’m grateful to those involved in the project and councillor Ah-Sing for leaving this and other successful projects in Ward 55,” she said.
