A call to support SA’s female trail athletes

Stellenbosch-based professional trail runner and coach, Landie Greyling, has called for South Africans to back their countrywomen as they line-up for the Ultra-trail Cape Town (UTCT) on Saturday November 30.

“The Springboks’ win at the Rugby World Cup showed how sport has the ability to unite us. My hope is that we harness this spirit, energy and inspiration and bring it to the trail running community.

“There are many strong international athletes competing but South Africa has plenty of talented stars who could be standing on the top step of the podium,” said Landie.

“We have a strong line-up of local female athletes, including Nicolette Griffioen and Naomi Brand, who are serious competitors in this gruelling event on the slopes of Table Mountain. My money is on a local woman to take top honours.”

Landie, who finished in second place in last month’s 42km Otter African Trail Run 42km, said her training had been without injuries and she anticipated a good race.

Those who would like to support the event should come to the Start Finish Village at Gardens Tech Rugby Club, 1 Montreal Avenue, Oranjezicht, on Saturday November 30, at 4am, to watch the start and to cheer on their favourites.

The first 100km finishers are expected from 2pm.

There are plenty of spectator support points at Kloof Corner, Constantia Nek, Llandudno Beach, Hout Bay Harbour and UCT.
