Bothasig Knights take down Villains

Bothasig Zack Phillips makes his way past third base for a score.

With two rounds remaining in the Cape Town Baseball Federation, Bothasig Knights may be out of the league championship but that is not to say they will take their foot off the pedal.

Knights sit third on the log after an 8-1 win against Durbanville Villains at Aber Sher Stadium at the weekend.

After 19 rounds, Knights won 15 and have 30 points to their name.

Rivals and defending champions, Bellville Tygers lead the log with 34 points after their weekend win against Athlone A’s.

With the loss, A’s fell to second on the log, two points behind the leaders.

At one point it had looked like A’s would break the stranglehold of Tygers and Knights as league champs.

They have not won the league since 2011 and the title has been changing hands between Tygers and Knights since then.

The game against Tygers was key to their ambitions of championship glory.

However, at the end of the day it was Tygers who were victors, 5-4 at home.

In three games the sides played this season, this was Tygers’ second win.

At this stage it would take a major shock for Athlone to claw their way back to the top of the standings with two games remaining.

Tygers play Helderberg Pirates and Westridge Yankees in their last two games, both games expected to go their way if history and form is to be taken into consideration.

Last season, the Knights lost their title to Bellville by two points.

Athlone’s last two games are Durbanville Villains and Knights.

The game against the Knights will bring the curtain down on this season and both sides will be looking to end on a high after a long campaign.

It might actually give Knights a chance to end the season in second place, depending on what happens in other results.

In other weekend results, VOB Macaws won their 11th game of the season with a 12-8 scoreline away to Helderberg Pirates; Maitland Giants got their seventh win after a 9-0 score against Westridge Yankees who made their comeback in the Major League after some time in the promotional league.

The penultimate round of the season takes place this coming Saturday. Knights play Giants, Villains take on Athlone A’s, VOB take on Yankees and Tygers host Pirates.
